This paper takes Shi Family Grand Countyard as an example to study the culture behind the carved images of quadrangle courtyard, and the methodology suggested by the two works "pattern of intention" and "research on image science" provides the theoretical basis for the author to study the brick and stone images of Shi Family grand countyard. This paper will make a comprehensive study of the carved images of Shi Family Grand Countyard, the Shi Family, folk beliefs and religious culture,as well as the economy and culture in Tianjin at the end of the qing dynasty and the beginning of the republic of China. From the analysis of the carved images,it will extend the thoughts and ideas of the local people of Shi yuanshi, the owner of the courtyard, and even of Yang liuqing. The interpretation of stone and brick images of the Shi Family Grand Countyard must be based on the history of the Shi family and the Shi Family Grand Countyard. The Shi Family Grand Countyard was originally the fourth gate of the Shi Family--zun mei tang.In the typical courtyard of traditional residential buildings, the carved images and spatial arrangement are used to highlight the rank of the superior and the subordinate. Then, the images become the concrete embodiment of the etiquette system and ethical norms. As the "first gentry in the west of Tianjin",the courtyard owner Shi yuanshi was endowed with the core symbolic status of Yang liuqing town. The background characteristics of the gentry and merchant class of the Shi Family are bound to be related to the commercial development of Yang liuqing and tianjin. At the end of 19 th century and the beginning of 20 th century, western thought had an impact on the traditional gentry. The western gate building built by Shi yuanshi shows the absorption of western culture,as well as the means of preserving oneself by westerners, and also reflects the collision of Chinese and western cultures hidden behind the image of Yang liuqing area.In Yang liuqing, religion and folk beliefs coexist.Shi yuanshi shows the importance of the Shi Family to the culture of "fu","shou" and "xi" through the forms and structural features of the auspicious imagessuch as bat, fairy peach and "he he er xian".The carved images of "dark eightimmortals","hehuan fairy pavilion" and "eight Buddha treasures" in the quadrangle reflect the interaction between Shi Family Grand Countyard and the religious culture of Tianjin Yang liuqing region. The culture implied by the carving image is contained in the image, which can only be solved one by one through the analysis of the image records. The carved image in the Shi Family Grand Countyard is not only the identity of the courtyard owner, but also the embodiment of the originality of the artisan.Behind the image are the complex semantics of Shi Family and Yang liuqing’s ideology and folk culture, which reflects the eternal yearning of the people for a better life.Shi yuanshi will be good hope into the construction of the courtyard, through the stone and brick images, stone yuan shi and Yang liuqing folk construction intention is also confirmed.
