Shen Congwen As A Critic

Shen Congwen,as a rare literary master in the history of modern Chinese literature,is carrying out literary criticism as well as literary creation,and Shen Congwen practiced his own literary criticism concept through university teaching,founding and hosting newspapers and magazines.In the 1930 s and 1940 s,Shen Congwen's critical articles were published in the collections of Mo Mo Ji and Yunnan Kan Yun Ji.This paper mainly outlines Shen Congwen as a literary critic from three aspects: the connotation of Shen Congwen's literary criticism,the controversy between Shen Congwen and the left-wing literary camp,and the value and influence of Shen Congwen's literary criticism.Shen Congwen adheres to the independent and free literary concept and emphasizes the important role of literary classics in the process of social development,which is different from the literary concept of the left-wing camp at that time,thus causing many debates in the literary world.The debate between Shen Congwen and the left-wing literature camp mainly focuses on the discussion of the function of literature,reflecting the different evaluation standards of literature value and the development path of literature in the 1930 s and 1940 s.Under the special historical background,the development of modern Chinese literary criticism is influenced by the two requirements of "salvation" and "Enlightenment",forming two different literary views of literature utilitarianism and literature aesthetics.There are complex relations between the two literary views,such as opposition,harmony and complementarity.Shen Congwen's literary criticism,as a representative sample,its formation and concealment can reflect the differences and contradictions between utilitarian and aesthetic literary concepts,as well as the influence of political and social environments on different literary concepts.
