A Study Of Translation Strategies For The Long Sentences In The United Nations'Science Report From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

The writer's translation text comes from UNESCO Science Report Towards 2030.Compiled by a team of International experts of UNESCO and based on a mass of data,UNESCO Science Report Towards 2030 describes and summarizes the trend of global scientific research and development in various countries and regions and proposes corresponding suggestions regarding their current situations and future development.Specifically,the writer translated the two sections of “Iran” and “South Africa”,which summarize the development history,the development status,and the future development trend of Iran and South Africa from aspects of economy,scientific research,medical care,education and so forth.A striking feature of the “Iran” and “South Africa” sections is they abound with long sentences.Under the guidance of Skopos Theory,combining its three principles,this paper first introduces information about the translation task and the features of text type and language.Next,the paper sets forth the development of Skopos Theory and its related theories.The paper then explores and analyzes the translation of long sentences in the text with concrete examples from the perspectives of word order,omission,and conversion.The completion of this paper leads the writer to realize the necessity of selecting an appropriate translation theory and correctly understanding the features of selected text.Through the discussion of the translation of long sentences,the writer believes that Skopos Theory and its three principles can offer an effective guidance in translating the United Nation's science reports and are applicable to the translation thereof.The aim of this paper is to propose reference in the English-to-Chinese translation of long sentences in the United Nation's science reports.
