A Translation Practice Report Of Long Sentences In The Body:A Guide For Occupants Under The Guidance Of The Skopos Theory

The translation of long sentences in English serves as a difficult point in English-Chinese translation practice since there are great differences between English and Chinese in the expressions and syntactical structures.English prefers long sentences,which often use modifying elements to express multiple and closely related concepts in a detailed way.However,Chinese prefers short sentences,which are easier to achieve a clear hierarchy,coherent tone and rhythmic sense.Therefore,it is necessary to select the appropriate translation strategies in translation.The translation cases of the report are picked out from a popular science English text on medical,which is called The Body: A Guide for Occupants.It introduces body’s functions and its remarkable ability to heal itself.The author uses a good deal of long sentences in the book,which reflects the strict logicality of the article and his professional research attitude.However,it brings some barriers in the translation process.In this translation practice,the translator focused on the discussion of long sentence translation methods.By summarizing and analyzing the features of long sentences in the original text,the translator introduced simple long sentences,complex long sentences and compound long sentences respectively.Based on the guidance of the three rules of the Skopos Theory,the translator mainly utilized seven strategies: sequencing,order-changing,cutting,embedding,splitting,amplification and omission and synthesis to analyze long sentences,and summarize the types of long sentences that each method is applicable to.The translator hopes that this report could provide some insight into the translation of popular science texts in the future by discussing features of popular science texts and translation of long sentences.Hopefully this report will provide reference for the study of translation for popular science in China,so that more people who are interested in popular science translation will pay attention to the combination of theory and practice,strive to improve their quality,and make contributions to the popular science undertakings in China.
