Based on the translation practice of foreign science and technology strategies in the library of Beijing Institute of Technology, this paper studies translation strategies of popular science texts under the guidance of Newmark's translation theory.Newmark put forward three functions of language, including expressive function, informative function and vocative function.According to these three functions,he also classified texts into three types: expressive text, informative text and vocative text.He thought translators should adopt different translation strategies according to different texts, among which "semantic translation" and "communicative translation" are quite effective.Semantic translation emphasizes the content of information and requires translators to be faithful to the original text;communicative translation emphasizes the effect of information production and requires translators to be loyal to target readers. This paper analyzes the features of popular science texts. As a kind of scientific text, the popular science text is aimed at spreading scientific knowledge to mass target readers. Therefore, except for the scientificity that science translation demands, popular science texts are also thought to be popular, literary and interesting. Its translation should be strictly faithful to the original with a rigorous scientific spirit so as to ensure the accuracy of information.Translators should also take into account the acceptability of target readers, paying attention to the popularity and coherence of translation. To make readers easily understand and accept the original content, the author put forward several translation strategies based on Newmark's translation theory: to use literal translation to accurately convey content and keep science text rigorous;to employ free translation to ensure that readers fully understand the source text;to adopt amplification to clarify semantics;to utilize reconstruction method to make the translation conform to the target readers' reading habits;to apply hypotaxis and parataxis to enhance the logic of expression. If the above strategies are applied to translation practice, the information and content of original text can be accuratelydelivered, with the effect of expression,to a certain extent, being reproduced.
