Thriving book market in China witnesses flourishing translation of original popular science works from developed countries, which ensures study on popular science texts.Aiming at spreading scientific and technological knowledge, promoting scientific approaches, disseminating scientific ideas and carrying forward scientific spirit, the popular science can be deemed as informative text with vocative function,as indicated by Peter Newmark, whose communicative translation theory possesses the directive function in popular science English(PSE)translation. In light of PSE translation status in China and combined with the text type and characteristics of popular science text, the author develops the theory into three respects of“effect-focus”,“free delivery of content”and“translator's discretion”,which derive from the main ideas of communicative translation theory. In this paper,an attempt is made at rethinking the corresponding methods and techniques to direct the PSE translation practice exemplified by some cases under the guidance of the theory. In this way,the translation version can be smoother, lighter, more idiomatic and easier to read so as to enable Chinese readers to achieve the same reading experience as the original reader.
