American country music originated in the south of the United States in the 1920 s.Its root can be traced back to the remote Appalachian Mountains towards the end of the1920 s.Most people living in the sparsely populated southern part of Appalachia were poor European migrants. To these people, music was essentially a strong impetus when facing hardship. This style of music gradually spread to the southern parts of the United States and was named as country music. The development of country music in the United States has been underway for nearly 100 years up until now.Its history of development could be divided into six stages. In these six different stages, traditional country music has been continuously integrating and fusing with other music cultures, forming different country music branches with their own characteristics. The term "Outlaw Country Music" originated in the fourth stage(1970-1980)of country music."Outlaw" means untraditional,as opposed to "Traditional Country Music".There seem to be many differences in music style, lyrics or expression of values between them.In this essay, the author takes the lyrics of both traditional country music and outlaw country music as the research objects in order to investigate and analyze the differences between them.In this investigation, literature research, content analysis, and field survey have been conducted. In addition to these steps,Chi-square test in statistics has also been utilized.A certain number of traditional country music and outlaw country music lyrics have been selected as samples. The themes, emotions, sentiments, and values of lyrics have been sorted based on the content of the lyrics. After that, the differences between traditional music and outlaw country music are analyzed by using Chi-square test. The null hypothesis was set as there is no difference between the two groups of variables. The final results of Chi-square show that the null hypothesis is rejected at the significance level at α =0.05,which could render the data credible within the 99.5% confidence interval. In other words,we can conclude that there are differences between the two groups of variables.
