This study explored the influence of user factors on symbol design using the stereotype production method.72 participants made up of Chinese and international students were asked to draw ideas based on 21 public symbol referents which are common in a multicultural community in the university environment. To investigate whether a participant's cultural background, gender, and field of study can have an influence in designing a symbol. The results suggest that one's field of education made it difficult to illustrate some concept. The differences in stereotype drawings for the cultural groups shows that individuals from the same background are more likely to choose similar concepts to represent an idea. These findings should assist in improving on the stereotype production method and practice. |
