Tithes are taxes imposed bythe European Church onthe inhabitants ofthe diocese. They ranthroughoutthe medieval period in Europe.Untilthe 17th and 18th centuries, some countries were still tithing. This kind of tax has existed particularly in Britain for a long time.Inthe course ofthe historical development of England, tithes have a huge impact on British agriculture and society.Thisthesis is a retrospection ofthe dilemma encountered by tithes inthe modern agricultural revolution in England and its response.Inthe eighteenth century England, tithe collection exacerbatedthe social contradictions atthat time, especiallythe contradiction betweenthe tithe owner, agricultural reform and improvement. The tithing gained bytheir hard work caused a great resentment fromthe latter and also underminedtheir confidence to make improvements. Therefore, tithe is regarded asthe most unfair tax by agronomists and political economists, and it is a serious obstacle tothe reform of agricultural reality. The 18th and 19th centuries werethe climax ofthe enclosure movement in England.Inthe enclosure movement,in order to permanently get rid ofthe tithe burden, the landowners did not hesitate to compensate one-eighth and one-fifth ofthe enclosed land tothe tithe owners.Strong hatred by tax owners.Atthe same time, this approach also provides ideas for tithe compensation. In 1836,the parliament promulgatedthe "Title Tax Compensation Law",abolishing tithes paid in kind and switching to regular land rent payments.Bythe end ofthe 19th century,England was confronted withthe "Great Depression" and competition for imported food, grain prices were dumped, and tithe issues were brought tothe political stage.Onthe one hand, the income of church members has shrunk andthe quality of living standards has declined.Onthe other hand, taxpayers have felt overwhelmed and continue to be dissatisfied. The government has introduced a new tithe bill. The history of tithe reform is closely related tothe reality of agricultural development in England. It has witnessedthe great changes in English society, especiallythe agricultural society, and istherefore alsothe history ofthe development of English society. It also reflectsthe ideas and characteristics ofthe development ofthe country.
