A Report On The Chinese Translation Of Love,Money&Parenting

This translation material is selected from Love,Money& Parenting written by Matthias Doepke and Fabrizio zilibotti.Published in 2019 by Princeton University Press,the book mainly describes different parenting styles adopted by parents in different cultural backgrounds in modern time.In this translation task,the first and second chapters of the book are translated.These two parts focus on the introduction of “economics of parenting”,the restrictions of parenting(time,energy and money),and three different types of parenting methods(authoritarian,permissive and authoritative parenting).Because of different levels of income inequality,parents in different countries adopt different ways of parenting.Based on Nord's theory of “functionality plus loyalty”,this translation report analyses the source text in its own context.Under the guidance of functionality plus loyalty theory,pragmatic translation problems,inter-cultural translation problems and interlingual translation problems are analyzed.Different strategies are used to solve problems,such as changing parts of speech,adjusting sentence structure.This translation report consists of four parts.Part one illustrates the background of this translation task.The second part presents the theory of “functionality plus loyalty” and the preparation of translation(the evaluation of the feasibility of the translation task,the analysis of the source text functionality and the translation strategies to be adopted).The third part analysis pragmatic,inter-cultural and interlingual translation problems under the guidance of “functionality plus loyalty”.Through the translation report,it is concluded that translation is a work which requires endurance and ability.The completion of a good translation task needs well preparation before translation,multidimensional knowledge,and continuous discussion with others in the process of translation.
