English Curriculum Standards for the Senior High School have set higher requirements for English reading teaching.Yet in senior high school English reading teaching,there exist many problems.For example,teachers usually neglect the systematic and scientific guidance of reading strategies in reading teaching.The source of reading material is often narrow and the content is out of date.Students have a small amount of reading.Content-based Instruction is a teaching mode,which integrates language teaching with subject content teaching and students' learning needs.Students can naturally acquire subject knowledge and improve their language proficiency,while learning the subject content in target language.Content-based Instruction has four characteristics: subject-matter core,use of authentic language and texts,obtaining new information,catering for the needs of specific students.Many empirical researches have proved Content-based Instruction can improve students' reading proficiency,but lack inspiring researches on specific reading ability.In addition,the former research subjects are mainly college students,with only a few middle school students.Therefore,this study which applies Content-based Instruction to senior high school English reading teaching is to explore the influence on students' reading abilities of reading for specific information and inference in senior high school.This study uses 154 students in two classes of senior one in Hebei Dingzhou Middle School as research subjects.Content-based Instruction reading teaching is performed in the experimental class,and the traditional English reading teaching is performed in the control class.This study answers three questions:1.What's the influence of Content-based Instruction on students' reading ability of reading for specific information in senior high school?2.What's the influence of Content-based Instruction on students' reading ability of inference in senior high school?3.What's the difference between influence of Content-based Instruction on reading abilities of reading for specific information and inference among students with differentreading levels in senior high school?The author uses the questions of specific information and inference in the paper of 2019 High School Entrance Examination in Hebei as the pre-test.Students in the experimental class are divided into high-score group,medium-score group and low-score group based on the method of Yuan(2008).The author uses the questions of specific information and inference in the paper of 2019 senior one final exam in Dingzhou as the post-test.The experiment lasts for four months.This author uses SPSS 17.0 to analyze the data.The experiment results show: 1.Content-based Instruction can significantly improve students' reading ability of reading for specific information in senior high school.Students solve the questions of direct information,indirect information and numeric calculation more efficiently.2.Content-based Instruction can significantly improve students' reading ability of inference in senior high school.Students infer the logic,the writing intention,and the implied meaning of texts more efficiently.3.Content-based Instruction makes a different influence on reading abilities of reading for specific information and inference among students with different reading levels in senior high school.Students with medium reading level benefit the most in finding direct and indirect information of texts,in solving questions of numeric calculation,and inferring the logic,the implied meaning of texts.There is no obvious difference of ability of inferring writing intention of texts among students with different reading levels.Yuan(2008)mentioned that Content-based Instruction has significantly improved reading abilities of students with high and medium reading level,while the students with low reading level has not improved their reading abilities significantly.It is hoped that the results of this research will enrich the study of Content-based Instruction on English reading teaching and be instructive for students' reading learning and teachers' reading teaching.
