An Empirical Research On English Reading Teaching Under Content-based Instruction Model In Senior High Schools

In order to improve students’ English level,the new curriculum reform proposes that we must actively strengthen the innovative education for students,starting from reading,writing,listening,speaking and other aspects,to carry out comprehensive education for students.Among them,reading is a very important content,which can not only improve students’ interest in English learning,enhance their sense of English language,but also effectively promote their English writing skills,increase their vocabulary and cultivate other comprehensive English abilities.“Content-based instruction ”(CBI)is a kind of teaching method that combines content with language and focuses on training students’ language skills.It plays a positive role in improving students’ English ability in all aspects.Content-based instruction has been studied by many scholars abroad,and the effect is remarkable.In China,scholars mainly focus on content-based instruction research in some universities,which has proved that CBI teaching model can improve students’ English comprehensive ability;however,the similar researches at the middle school level are very limited.Therefore,the author tries to do some researches on CBI teaching mode in senior high school English reading teaching,and thus she puts forward the following two research questions:(1)Can the reading teaching under the CBI model enhance the senior high school students’ motivation and interest of their English learning ? If it can,how?(2)Can the reading teaching under the CBI model improve the senior high school students’ English discourse reading ability and achievement ? If it can,in what way?In this study,two parallel classes from Datong No.4 Middle School in Shanxi Province were randomly selected as the experimental class and control class,and 100 students from these two classes were treated as the research subjects.The author conducted CBI mode English reading teaching and traditional English reading teaching respectively in the two classes.Moreover,the author used questionnaire,test and interviews to explore the concrete situation of high school students in learning English reading,and the data were sorted and analyzed by using SPSS 22.After collecting and analyzing the data,the author found that after adopting the CBI teaching mode,students had more interest in English learning,and their discourse reading ability and reading level have also improved.In addition,this article puts forward some inspirations in the teaching of English reading.First of all,teachers should pay special attention to cultivating students’ interest and motivation in English learning.Through continuous improvement of learning content materials to expand and enhance their knowledge,and in order to increase their interest in English reading.Secondly,teachers should actively provide a variety of classroom activities and encourage students to actively participate in these classroom activities to acquire new knowledge and learning methods in the activities.In addition,teachers should also pay attention to the combination of their own language and teaching content to improve students’ language skills.Finally,in the daily teaching work,teachers should update their English reading teaching materials to improve students’ English language ability.
