English reading which is one of four basic language skills plays very significant role for the students to learn English well.As one of the input skills,only a lot of reading can have a positive impact on improving reading ability.But,the limited teaching time in English class greatly limits students' reading quantity and restricts the development of students' reading ability.However,English extracurricular reading can make up for this deficiency.Also,there are some clear requirements of doing English extracurricular reading in the English Curriculum Standard(2017).It has been about three years since the English Curriculum Standard(2017)were carried out.What is the current situation of students' English extracurricular reading in junior high school? The purpose of this study is to investigate students' real situation of English extracurricular reading in Junior high school,so as to find out the problems and put forward suggestions.Based on Krashen's input hypothesis and the autonomous learning theory,the author carried out an investigation research of 480 students about the current situation of students' English extracurricular reading in Experimental Middle School in Huhhot by the methods of questionnaires and interview.This thesis tries to answer the followingquestions: 1.What's the current situation of students' English extracurricular reading in junior high school? 2.What are the main problems? What are the causes of these problems? 3.What are the differences in English extracurricular reading among the students from different grades ?As is shown in the results of the investigation,the current situation of students' English extracurricular reading is not optimistic.Although most students are interested in English extracurricular reading,and think it useful to improve their English level,their English extracurricular reading exists the main problems of monotonous reading material,limited reading time and inadequate reading quantity as well as lack of reading strategies and good reading habits.In the meanwhile,their poor English proficiency and heavy burden of homework prevent them from carrying out English extracurricular reading.The reasons are that the heavy burden of schoolwork leads to students' monotonous English extracurricular reading materials,little reading time and insufficient reading quantity;the English teachers don't pay enough attention on the English extracurricular reading and lack systematic guidance,supervision and evaluation on students' extracurricular reading as well as encouragement and support.There are some differences in English extracurricular reading among the students from different grades.Students' reading reading interest and reading quantity in English extracurricular reading is negatively correlated with their grades.However,their autonomy of choosing English extracurricular reading material and their use of electronicmobile devices are positively correlated with their grades.So is the heavy burden of homework impeding the English extracurricular reading.The students in Grade Two spend more time in doing English extracurricular reading and have better reading habits than the students in the other two grades.To solve these problems,here are some suggestions for the English teachers on how to improve the students' English extracurricular reading: first,arouse students interest in English extracurricular reading by various effective activities;second,combine the English extracurricular reading with the daily English reading teaching activity and make it an extension of classroom reading;third,help the students choose the suitable English materials;fourth,strengthen students' English reading strategy training,develop their reading habits and guide them the method of autonomous reading;fifth,adopt diversified approaches to participating in,supervise and check students' English extracurricular reading.
