James Joyce(1882-1941),an Irish writer and poet, was one of the greatest writers in the history of western literature in the twentieth century. His Ulysses pushed modernism to its peak. This novel describes the activities and inner thoughts of three“anti-heroes”,who are Bloom,Stephen and Molly in 20 hours, showing the inner truth of the characters and all aspects of Dublin,Ireland and the whole European society at the beginning of the 20 th century. This paper applies the theory of language deviation by British linguist Geoffrey Leech to analyze the phenomenon of language deviation in Ulysses.Based on this, the stylistic effect is further explored. To be specific, the thesis aims to explore how Joyce makes the writing technique of “stream of consciousness”,characterization and aesthetic thoughts reflect the effect of“making the stone stoney” put forward by the Russian formalist Shklovsky. The study is divided into five chapters.Chapter one is an introduction, mainly presenting the basic situation of Joyce and Ulysses. It also analyzes the research on Joyce and Ulysses at home and abroad.Chapter two introduces the theoretical foundation of the research, which basically clarifies the concepts, causes and main contents of language deviation theory, aiming at further improving the theoretical level of this study.Chapter three is the expression of language deviation in Ulysses, from the perspectives of phonological deviation, semantic deviation, lexical deviation, syntactic deviation and register deviation.Chapter four analyzes the stylistic effect of language deviation in Ulysses from three aspects.Firstly,it analyzes the art of “stream of consciousness” of language in Ulysses and the sublimating “unconsciousness” to “collective unconsciousness”.Secondly,it expounds the characterization of characters caused by language deviation.By analyzing the relationship between the “stone” behind the language deviation and the characteristics of the characters,it is found that in the process of describing anti-hero characters,Joyce uses language deviation to construct polyphonic structure and ironic style, and forms obvious characters’ characteristics.Thirdly,it summarizes the breakthrough of aesthetic consciousness, aesthetic spiritual construction and aesthetic literary value to reflect the aesthetic thoughts of language deviation in Ulysses.Chapter five is the conclusion, which summarizes the whole study.Deviationalways exists in literature works, but no matter how the deviation manifests itself, the essence of deviation never changes in the process of deviation. Therefore, this is the meaning of the novel, which reshapes everything important that can eventually“making the stone stoney”.By analyzing the application skills of language deviation in Ulysses, this study reflects the expression of the fluidity of consciousness in language deviation, and concludes that this writing technique forms a coherent expression in Ulysses with highlighting the aesthetic thoughts of Joyce when describing the characters of anti-heroes.Behind the aesthetic literary value, there are more precise ideological stand and rational content, such as the spirit of criticism and doubt, the spirit of parody and entertainment and the spirit of imagination and fiction. This study focuses on the writing technique of “stream of consciousness”,characterization, aesthetic structure of language deviation in Ulysses, and explores the “nature of stone” behind the stylistic features, which will further deepen the research on Ulysses. |
