Tony Morrison is one of the most outstanding African-American women writers. For her brilliant and creative talent she has won the Nobel Prize once in 1993, which makes her the first female black writer to receive such an honor. In the process of composing a novel, she puts emphasis on the writing techniques and skills because her language is not only humorous and quick-witted, but also absorbs the tradition of oral literature and changes the narrative skills, which makes her works more convincing. In the process of depicting character, Morrison also has such an incentive mind that she penetrates the figures with exquisite description and abundant emotions, which lays the foundation of Tony Morrison as a mater in literature. The Bluest Eye was published in 1970, which makes a breakthrough in the subject matter of the black literature. Morrison is the first writer who reveals the living situation of the black to the public and she criticizes the current social systems and values, uncovers the spiritual sufferings under the long-term racial discrimination. Unprecedentedly, this novel chooses a black girl, Pecola, as the heroine of this story. Attributing the tragic life to a pair of blue eyes that the white are associated with, she prays God to bestow her a pair of blue eyes, however, the dream is frustrated. Moreover, she is raped by her biological father and gives birth to a premature dead baby, which eventually leads Pecola to be immersed in the crazy state. This thesis analyzes the characters and the arrangement of the structure of The Bluest Eye from the point of view of the deviation of stylistics. Theoretically, combining the sorting technique of Levin as well as Liu Shisheng and Zhu Ruiqing, this thesis employs the stylistic deviation including the language deviation and the structure deviation. Different from the other analysis perspectives, it starts from a new one—the stylistic deviation, to have a deep analysis against this novel, which can as well account for the unusual places in the arrangements of language and structure. This thesis consists of three parts, which are the introduction, the body and the conclusion in general. In the part of introduction, it briefly introduces the life of the author as well as the basic content of The Bluest Eye. Besides, there is also an introduction of the research status and the reason, the aim of selecting the topic. The body is divided into three chapters. The first chapter is theoretical foundation. It states the theory of stylistic deviation and how the stylistic deviation is applied in The Bluest Eye. It clarifies the theoretical foundation of this thesis that is divided into two parts, separately language deviation and structure deviation to analyze the characters.Chapter Two analyzes the techniques the author uses in depicting the characterizations. Firstly, blending a special kind of language, which is black dialect, the paper explains from the perspectives including: omissions, wrong spellings, and the features of the sentences as well. Next, it also mixes a kind of special black music, blues, which makes the work so different from the other normal ones and traces it to its source to be stylistic deviation. In the end, starting from the point of view of rhetoric devices, which is the most primary part of semantic deviation, to interpret the skills in describing figures inside, the paper also reaches its writing aims. Exactly owing to the adoption of the figures of speech in the field of deviation, it accounts for the effect of so many rhetoric devices applying in the work. Mainly the kinds of them are clarified into symbol, metaphor, irony and pun, which makes clear the intention of writing of the author. In all, the second chapter has a deep and subtle analysis of the meaning of the depicting of characterization and transmitting the implication under the characters. In Chapter Three, this thesis selects a microscopic angle, which is the arrangement of the whole novel, combining with the theory of structure deviation including the aspects of the narrative point of view, narrative time and narrative structure, whose aspects are utilized in describing and depicting the main figures of the novel. In the first place, narrative point of view is not a single one, however, it mixes several kinds. For example, it includes the first point of view of Claudia as a child, as well Pauline and Cholly, and the omniscient point of view of Claudia as a mature woman. With mingle of the narrative points of view, the whole work appears to be tridimensional and rich in variations, which absolutely let the readers attach to the work. In the second place, as for this one of the numerous works of Tony Morrison, she has not just chosen one narrative time, but a few such as narration interspersed with flashbacks, flashbacks, as well chronological narrative. Due to such a technique in creating a work, what Tony Morrison writes appears to extraordinarily stand out among numerous literary works. Last part is concerned with narrative structure, which adopts multiple narrative text mode and plug-in narrative mode. Moreover, in front of the body, there is a paragraph’s quotation from the text of American reading material, but the same part is repeated three times and each time in different printing type through which the theme is revealed. The fourth chapter is the conclusion of the paper, which summarizes the techniques that the author uses from the perspective of stylistic deviation. Combined the theories of deviation, it can have an accountable explanation on the writing skills of The Bluest Eye from the level of literature. Through several perspectives of analysis, it is natural to draw a conclusion that the work itself is with great value no matter in language or structure or the characters, which cannot easily be intimated or surpassed. Therefore, this work is still a mature fruit in the evergreen tree.
