A Case Study On Deviation Translation

Style translation is a new research field, which brings up a fresh research subject fitting the requirement of the development of the new era. Embracing the view that style as deviance, the enormity of the task that lies ahead in translation is how to reconstruct these deviant phenomena in style. A great number of translators have been researching in this field. Although quite a few achievements have been fulfilled, hardly much guiding experience can be drawn due to the flexibility of stylistic deviances therefore this thesis intends to approach deviation in literary texts from translation dimension, with an aim to probe into this phenomenon for an appreciation of its significance in literary texts and its proper translation.To serve the purposes of this thesis, the author chooses Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as research material and arranges six chapters to conduct the study.Chapter One briefly introduces the background of the study, its significance and organization. Chapter Two Literature Review mainly introduces the definition of deviation and its classification, taking Wang Shouyuan's classification as research reference. Then it elaborates on studies home and abroad and two perspectives of studies on linguistic deviation translation:functional equivalent perspective and stylistic perspective and chooses a combined way of two perspectives for further study in this thesis. Chapter Three focuses on the methodology employed in this thesis and it is conducted from fours aspects:research questions, research materials, procedures and data collection and analysis. In Chapter Four, comparative study of surface-structure deviation has been undertaken covering phonological deviation, syntactic deviation, lexical deviation and graphological deviation. In Chapter Five, the deep-structure deviation has been studied from the aspect of contradiction, transference and overstatement. Different translation stratedies on these deviations have been noticed and concluded after comparative study. In Chapter Six, tentative rules have been put forward after a careful comparison of five Chinese versions of the novel:Deviation-for-deviation and Norm-for-deviation. Limitations and suggestions have also been presented for further study in the chapter.
