The relevant question such as the protection and use of cultural heritage in recent years has high attention at home and abroad.The material cultural heritage includes small movable cultural relics and big historical city,it is a witness to the progress of human civilization.China has a long history,a large number of cultural relics.Among them,the historical city not only contains cultural relics and historical buildings but also has profound historical and cultural significance.The protection of historical and cultural cities must not only preserve the overall historical features of the city,but also coordinate with urbanization.No matter for protecting the ancient city or showing its value and educational functions,the management and maintenance of the ancient city itself has faced new challenges and opportunities.Through the protection of historical cities to increase the breadth of cultural heritage protection,detailed cultural heritage protection measures will extend the concept of protection to all levels of the ancient city,creating the potential and cultural connotation of the ancient city.Therefore,protecting historical cities is of great significance.The author examines the current status of the cities in Yangzhou,China and Nara,Japan,the author makes a comparative study of the cultural heritage theories and a practice of two countries,explores the protection and development of historical cities in China and Japan,and what we can learn from each other in the protection of historical and cultural cities,which will be useful for improving the protection system of our ancient cities.Being chosen as case studies objects,Yangzhou and Nara both are historical cities with thousands of year's history,and both have plenty of historic sites.Both are constantly updating means of cultural relic protection under the impact of modernization and foreign cultures.With Japanese successful protection,experience examines the crux of the issue of protection and management of the ancient city of Yangzhou and finds out the direction of protection of the ancient city of Yangzhou.Therefore,the author compares the development history,protection status and protection methods of the historical cities in the two places,and draws out suitable countermeasures for the protection and development of the ancient city of Yangzhou,expand the protective surface of the ancient city,so that the potential characteristics and functions of the ancient city can be revealed,and the ancient city can be preserved for a long time.
