Since ancient times, especially in the early years,we've spent most of our time on food,From hunting and foraging to the later agricultural period to the present day, whether it is to select the ingredients in the market or to order food in the restaurant,it is also a means of human understanding of the world, and it can also reflect the situation and psychological changes of human in different periods. In painting,we can also see the "evolutionary history" of food:From "hunting pictures" in cave paintings to tracing the living habits of ancient ancestors,to studying the table culture of various classes from the dishes on the table of western aristocrats and commoners as depicted by painters,to examining the composition and basis of still life paintings in the hot examination sites of today's college entrance examination. In the history of painting, there are many famous artists' descriptions of food, and the meaning of food in each painting is different. An apple that is commonly seen may have been the forbidden fruit of Adam and eve,and may have been the indispensable center of composition in Cezanne's still life.In my opinion, studying the meaning of food in paintings is an important way for me to have a deeper understanding of paintings and authors.Starting from the painting itself, this paper investigates people's eating habits, class differences, the relationship between works and literature,as well as religious beliefs and medical concepts in different societies and different periods,in order to deepen the understanding of the picture and improve my understanding of watercolor painting.Based on the history of eastern and western art and painting, this paper refers to relevant literature and works of painting to understand the painter's intention by analyzing the meaning of food in painting.
