A Study Of Redundancy In The English Version Of China's National Defense White Paper From The Perspective Of Skopostheorie

In recent years,with the continuous growth of comprehensive national strength in China,the outside world,especially western countries,has increasing concerns and worries about the national defense and military development in China.As an authoritative document issued by the government,China's National Defense White Paper(CNDWP)has systematically explained the basic situation of national defense and military construction in China.It is helpful for the whole world to understand the Chinese army.However,there are some redundancies beyond the original Chinese texts in the English versions of CNDWP,which will negatively affect the quality of translation and inevitably hinder target reader's understanding.The research,combining redundancies in the English versions of CNDWP with Skopostheorie,aims to provide reference for the translation of CNDWP and provide support for translators to correctly deal with redundancies by researching the classifications and processing strategies of redundancies.As an important theory of Functionalism,Skopostheorie emphasizes the importance of the skopos in translation.It regards translation as a purposeful intercultural communication activity.Hans Vermeer(1996,2000)pointed out that translators should select translation strategies in accordance with the skopos and pay attention to the influence of cultural differences on readers' acceptability.Based on Skopostheorie,the research explores the categories,causes and translation strategies of redundancies in the English versions of CNDWP.The thesis uses the literature method and speculative method to make a comprehensive application of the experience,the qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis.It aims to answer the following two questions:(1)What are the classifications and causes of redundancies in the English versions of CNDWP?(2)What are the translation strategies of redundancies in the English versions of CNDWP?To solve these problems,the research first divides redundancies in the English versions of CNDWP into lexical level and sentence level,and subdivides the lexical redundant into nouns,verbs and modifiers.Meanwhile,it also probes into the redundancy default in the English versions of CNDWP.Secondly,the thesis explores the translation strategies of redundancies in CNDWP according to the three rules of Skopostheorie.The research finds that the redundancies in the English versions of CNDWP pay more attention to the lexical and sentence level.And the lexical level is mainly embodied in nouns,verbs and modifiers while redundancy default is mainly embodied in cultural default.In the translation of CNDWP,the translator,guided by the Skopostheorie,should follow the skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule and adjust and change the redundant components of the translation to fit the information capacity of the target readers,thus keeping the dynamic redundancy balance in the new language carrier and ensuring the success of the information transmission.
