Private supplementary tutoring, also vividly known as "shadow education",is a supplementary form of mainstream school education and constantly imitates mainstream school education, mainly aiming at improving students' academic performance. With the overall improvement of national education, students, parents, schools and society show higher demand for students' private supplementary tutoring. As a consequence, shadow education has recently developed greatly in both urban and rural areas.Among all the subjects,English is a compulsory course for learners. For junior middle school students,English is a compulsory key subject in the examination, and its score directly affects the ranking of the class and grade. At the same time,English as a language subject, has its particularities and most family education lacks English tutoring. As a product of examoriented education, parents' English is generally not good.Even parents with college degrees are not enough to guide low-level English learning.Parents can only seek help from shadow education. In addition, because parents cannot provide English tutoring and help, some of them turn to shadow education institutions to alleviate their load and fill students' free time.As a result,English occupies a large proportion in shadow education. This thesis mainly takes the students of grade two in public junior middle school in urban areas and public junior middle school in rural areas of Changsha as the survey objects.Data is obtained through two ways. One way is to give questionnaires to students. The other way is to interview students' parents. Each of the two schools had six classes of students who filled out the questionnaire.Among them, there are 287 students from urban areas and 270 students from rural areas. And some students' parents were interviewed. The statistical method of SPSS quantitative analysis is adopted to analyze the survey data and then to compare the similarities and differences between the junior middle students of the urban and rural areas on participating in English shadow education, and to solve two research questions:(1)What are the characteristics and the differences of English shadow education between junior middle students in urban and rural areas?(2)What are the reasons of the differences of English shadow education between junior middle students in urban and rural areas? The survey data of the study shows that English shadow education has developed rapidly in both urban and rural areas, and the number of students participating in English shadow education in both areas is large. However, there are great differences in the development of English shadow education between urban and rural areas, which are embodied in the reasons of students to participate in English shadow education, the specific content of English shadow education, the faculty of English shadow education in urban and rural areas, teaching equipment and other aspects.By comparing and analyzing the students' participation in English shadow education in these two junior middle schools, this study finds the current situation of the junior middle school students' participation in English shadow education in Changsha and the causes of this phenomenon are various. On this basis, some suggestions are put forward for the current situation in the development of English shadow education, for example, students' parents should selectively allow their children to participate in shadow education, mainstream schools should take the initiative to provide homework guidance for students, and our government should reasonably guide and regulate the development of shadow education, strengthen the construction of teachers' teams in rural areas, and promote the transformation of parents' educational concepts and so on.
