Homework,as the extension of the class teaching,is also a major step of teaching process and an approach for students to acquire,consolidate,and apply knowledge so as to improve their abilities as well as qualities.However,according to present study,homework cannot meet the requirements of curriculum reform and people in society have negative comments on homework,including problems of heavy burden,poor quality and unsatisfying effects etc.As homework is the key to deepening curriculum reform,actions should be taken to improve homework.Besides,in daily teaching,students' English homework is in poor quality.They don't seem to be enthusiastic enough to accomplish it.Homework problems such as copying or delaying often happen from time to time.So,solving the problem of how to improve homework quality is essential to students' English learning,the quality of teaching and curriculum reform.This paper is developed based on constructivism and multiple intelligence theory.Through action research,this paper is expected to make a research about three major questions:(1)What is the overall situation of English homework in the classes taught by the author before the action?(2)How can multi-dimensional homework be designed effectively?(3)What are the effects of multi-dimensional English homework? The action research lasts for 11 week,and the research subjects are 106 students who study in a key senior high school.The research is divided into two periods.The first round of action research is a trial stage while the second round of action research is the stage of adjustment and improvement.Specifically,week 2 to week 6 is for round one,including one week for observation and reflection.Later,the next 5 weeks is spent for the second round of action research,in which the author adjusts and improves the plan.From the study,it is found that the current English homework is in poor quality and cannot arouse students' learning interest.Besides,the intensity of homework cannot meet some students' need and there exists delay in homework feedback.In order to arouse students' interest in English homework and improve homework quality,action research is decided to optimize English homework design by using the multi-dimensional homework design.Based on the philosophy of multi-dimensional homework design,such as multi-subjects,multi-objectives,multi-layers,multi-forms and multi-corrections,8 typical English homework is designed during the action research by enriching the homework source,increasing participants and designing homework in layers etc.Results show that using multi-dimensional homework is effective for students not only to increase their learning interest,but also to improve their academic achievements.In the meantime,they feel less burdened.According to this action research,the author puts forward four useful suggestions to improve English homework by using multi-dimensional design and they are to design multi-types homework to meet students' needs,design multi-layers homework to give students more options,enrich the source of homework to improve homework quality and give multiple feedbacks to make homework effective.
