Based on the source texts,Xichang: Why Are Satellites Launched Here?,Mianyang: a Small City with a Large Number of Academicians,Panzhihua: the Miracle in the Great Rift Valley,and Ya’an: the Back Garden on the Ancient Tea Horse Road excerpted from The Miracles of Sichuan,the 9th issue of Chinese National Geography in 2003,the translation report explores the difficulties encountered and the translation strategies adopted in tourism texts’ translation under the guidance of the Functional Equivalence Theory.The historical backgrounds,geographical and humanistic features of Xichang,Mianyang,Panzhihua and Ya’an are introduced in the selected texts in a brisk writing style featuring artistic language.When reading the texts,readers can gain much enjoyment from the artistic and aesthetic descriptions.In this process,the local culture of Sichuan is understood naturally.Hence the selected texts are characterized by being practical,aesthetic and cultural.In translation,the translator should try to reproduce the style of the source texts as much as possible while taking into account the acceptability of the target readers so that readers of the target texts can have similar reading responses as those of the source texts do.This report is composed of Introduction,Translation Process,Introduction to the Source Texts,Case Studies Guided by Functional Equivalence Theory,and Conclusion.Among them,Chapter Four,namely,Case Studies Guided by Functional Equivalence Theory serves as the core of this translation report.This chapter gives a brief introduction to Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory and its application in the translation practice,makes a detailed analysis of the translation difficulties at the lexical,syntactic and stylistic levels in the translation project as well as corresponding translation methods or techniques adopted to deal with these difficulties so as to realize the maximum functional equivalence between the source texts and the translated texts.Translating the selected texts and writing the corresponding translation report aim to promote the study of English translation of local tourism materials,publicize Sichuan culture and provide some references for relevant translation practices.
