A Research Report On C-E Translation Of Public Signs In Ningbo

In light of the MTI graduation thesis requirements,this thesis is finished with a form of research report.The report is about the current situation of C-E translation of public signs in Ningbo.Called “Yong” for short,Ningbo has a developed system of shipping and transportation and has established trade relationship with many countries in the world so that it is not strange to see foreign friends in Ningbo.At present,the public signs in most areas of Ningbo has been bilingualized,which reflects not only the trend of Ningbo City's development towards an international metropolis,but also shows the respect and concern for foreign friends.As an important part of Ningbo's publicity to the outside world,Bilingual public signs is an embodiment of the city's level of international exchange and humanity environment.However,the author found lots of improper translations even some translations with errors.Those translations not only exert negative effect on the image of Ningbo,but also are not conducive to the exchange between the city and other countries.Analyzing the errors appearing in the English translations of public signs in Ningbo,the author put forward revised translations according to Guidelines for the use of English in public service areas published in November,2017.The purpose of this report is to provide reference for the public sign translations in Ningbo,to make foreign friends' daily life more easier in Ningbo,to promote exchanges between Ningbo and other countries,to improve the construction of the public sign system of Ningbo and to build a good image of Ningbo.The author has conducted a field research,and more than 680 public sign translations have been collected from famous tourist attractions,commercial areas,recreational parks,railway stations and campus building.The author analyzes the errors appearing in public sign translations of Ningbo with the guidance of Peter Newmark's communicative translation method and “ three C ” principles concerning public sign translations.Those translation errors have been classified into three categories,namely,errors at linguistic level,errors at pragmatic level and errors at cultural level followed by different error types.By reflecting the reasons that lead to these errors,some suggestions for improving public sign translations in Ningbo are put forward.Last,a conclusion is drawn.The author summarizes the findings and limitations of the research report.
