In senior high school English teaching,writing ability can best reflect students' comprehensive English ability.Writing needs to be demonstrated by critical thinking,writing is closely related to the characteristics of critical thinking.5E teaching model is put forward by BSCS according to Atkin-Karplus learning ring.It includes five steps:engagement,exploration,explanation,elaboration and evaluation,which are highly consistent with the characteristics of critical thinking.Therefore,based on the current situation of senior high school English writing teaching class and senior high school students' English writing proficiency,and on the basis of critical thinking theory,this paper aims at discussing the application of 5E teaching model to improving students' critical thinking ability in high school' English writing class.The research questions are:(1)Are senior high school students more interested in English writing through 5E teaching model?(2)Is 5E teaching model effective to improve students' critical thinking in English writing(the ability of critical thinking is mainly embodied in four aspects of writing: question analysis,arguments,layout and expression)?This study conducted a three-month experiment with 80 students in the experimental class and the control class.Teachers used 5E teaching model to teach writing in the experimental class.The traditional writing teaching model was adopted in the control class.Questionnaires and test papers were conducted before and after the experiment.Finally,the results of the test papers were analyzed with SPSS.The results show that:(1)In the experimental class,the students' interest in English writing course has been improved significantly after the experiment,in contrast with the control class which has no evident improvement;(2)Through the 5E teaching model,there are remarkable differences among the students in the experimental class in question analysis,layout,arguments and expression.It demonstrated that the 5E writing teaching model can improve the critical thinking ability of senior high school students in English writing class.
