The English Curriculum Standard in 2017 points out that it is important for students to acquire language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability in English learning.Owing to some subjective and objective factors,it is difficult for some students to meet the standard.The students are defined as English underachievers in this thesis.This phenomenon not only has a deleterious influence on the students themselves,but also affects the realization of quality education.So,it is imminent to transform these students.Reading is a powerful carrier to develop students' critical thinking.At the same time,it is a crucial medium to stimulate students' interest and it is a vital factor to improve students' self-learning ability in English learning in senior high schools.Some scholars have advocated that English underachievers' reading ability can be improved by some specific reading strategies,but it is difficult to transform the students if they are not skilled at applying these general strategies to their reading.At present,few researchers have come up with a specific reading model to transform the students.Suhomulinsy(2001)gives detailed and specific guidance to the students with learning disability,especially in reading.Therefore,this thesis designs a 4R reading model for English underachievers based on the reading guidance.The specific steps of this model are listed as follows: read with goals,read for structure,read for details and read for thinking.The thesis seeks to investigate the influence of 4R reading model for English underachievers concerning their reading skills and their reading ability in senior high schools.Before the experiment,the experimental subjects and experimental tools are selected carefully.In the experiment,two reading tests and two questionnaires are conducted for the English underachievers in the experimental group and the control group.After the experiment,the data from two tests and two questionnaires are collected and are analyzed by SPSS 13.0.After a semester of an empirical research,the experiment shows that: 1)the students in the experimental group can use reading strategies more fluently and frequently than the students in the control group.2)the students in the experimental group have got a better reading grade than the students in the control group.It indicates that the 4R reading model not only helps the students to master reading skills,but also helps the students to improve their reading ability.Therefore,the 4R reading model is suitable for English underachievers in senior high schools.
