Recent years have witnessed the apparently rising popularity of TED Talks on the Internet.Characterized by conciseness,wide-ranging topics and creative ideas,TED Talks provide access to rapid exchange of global information in a fast world.Based on eco-translatology theory, this paper studies the subtitle translation of TED Talks in an attempt to interpret translator's selective adaptations and adaptive selections during the translation process from linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions. From this, suggestions on some applicable translation methods and strategies are available for reference. In the subtitle translation of TED Talks, translators are expected to positively adapt to the translational eco-environment.First,translators should consider synthetically the features of the source text, the constraints and principles of TED Talks subtitling and make a preliminary estimate of the target audience's acceptance.Second, translators should endeavor to make adaptive transformations in as many dimensions as possible to get a preferable translation with a higher degree of holistic adaptation and selection.Third,if transformations made in different dimensions contradict each other, translators have to evaluate the significance and make a tradeoff reliably.Furthermore, the translation methods and strategies suggested do not serve as permanent solutions but references for translators. So the selection of translation methods and strategies should be made on a case-by-case basis.Last, cultural elements should be dealt with appropriately.Translators can use foreignization strategy to expose Chinese audience to foreign cultures while employing domestication strategy to create a similar effect on the Chinese audience so as to achieve effective cross-cultural communication. This thesis gives an eco-translatological explanation of the subtitle translation of TED Talks while playing a positive role in providing references for TED Talks translators.
