With the rapid development of the Internet technology,English teaching ideas and approaches are changed in today's interconnected world.Under the guidance of the multimodal discourse analysis theory,many linguists put multimodal teaching approach into higher education practice since 1990 s.And a better teaching effect has been achieved.Kress& van Leeuwen considered that the modality has social significance just like the language.The modality includes visual sense,posture,and action.Multimodal teaching approach emphasizes that language teaching combines with non-language teaching such as images and actions.This teaching approach helps students understand the texts better from different dimensionality and senses especially in English reading class.Nowadays,multimodal teaching approach has been used in university,senior high school,middle school or even elementary school in cities and has received good results.However,multimodal teaching approach is not popularized in rural areas because of the limitations of the educational facilities,teachers' training opportunities and the basis of the students.Luckily,with the sustainable development of Internet Plus Education models,multimedia equipment such as whiteboard is brought into class in rural areas.And the conditions are provided for multimodal teaching approach.For example,since the introduction of multimedia equipment,English teachers in Jiayu middle school in Henan,have actively tried to use multimodal teaching approach to explore its significance in improving students' reading ability.In addition,I found that traditional reading teaching approach is not suitable to meet the requirement of new senior high school examination because the requirement was modified and publish in 2019.This adjustment was called the adjustment of English examination from for ordinary senior high school in Henan.The instruction stated that multiple choices which aims to test grammar will be deleted and the score of the cloze will be increased by 5 points and the text filling will be included in the exam.It means that it is hard for the students to improve English achievement by the traditional way--the way of taking notes of grammar.The purpose of this thesis aims to try to use multimodal teaching approach and explore its positive influence on English reading class in rural areas.Three questions are attempted: 1.Compared with the traditional English teaching approach in rural middle school,how does it have an effect on the process of English reading learning? 2.What's the influence of multimodal teaching approach on rural middle school students' English reading scores? 3.What advantages does multimodal teaching approach have over traditional English reading teaching approach?The thesis took the two classes in Grade 8 in Jiayu middle school,Henan as an example.The whole experiment which included questionnaires,pre-test,post-test,and interview.By analyzing the data with Python3,it finds that multimodal teaching approach has received a good result in this school.For example,the reading scores and abilities of the students are improved.
