Impacts Of Nigerian English Accent On English To Chinese Consecutive Interpreting And Coping Strategies

For interpreters,unfamiliar accents often pose a great challenge and directly impact their interpreting performance.Knowing how to handle the accent issue is,therefore,essential to a successful completion of the interpreting task.Based on the interpreting practice at 2018 Cirrus Program,the author identifies eight phonological features of the speaker's Nigerian English accent and finds that these features have hampered her listening comprehension,made her spend much time and energy struggling with the accent issue and increased her psychological pressure.After a detailed analysis of the examples of accent taken from the author's field interpreting,the report puts forward corresponding coping strategies,including pre-interpreting preparations and on-site strategies.It is hoped that this report will offer some ideas to relevant studies,increase interpreter trainees' understanding of Nigerian English accent and enable them to better address the accent issue in interpreting practice.
