This dissertation conducts a case study on the mock conference of 2015 Belt and Road Regional Cooperation Summit. As the theme of the mock conference was the Belt and Road Initiative, the guest speakers inevitably mentioned terms about Chinese culture, politics, and geography. Therefore, considering that the English listeners might have difficulty understanding these terms due to a lack of relevant background knowledge, the interpreter adopted addition,an interpreting technique,as an attempt to make the terms better understood. However, several mistakes reoccurred while the interpreter was using the addition technique. Therefore, this dissertation is going to find out the reasons why these errors occur and how to avoid them. The dissertation performs a close analysis on the transcript of the conference, and categorizes the errors into three groups, which are the additions that erode fidelity, the additions with language mistakes, and the additions that take up too much time.Based on the case study,it can be concluded that the reasons for the above errors are as follows: wrong decision of adopting the addition tactic, violation of the fidelity principle, and a lack of background knowledge and language proficiency. Therefore, this dissertation proposes three coping tactics to reduce the errors whenever an interpreter is using the addition technique.First, make the right judgment and choose the right interpreting technique.Second, stick to the code of fidelity.Third, keep learning and enhance English proficiency. The above proposals are made with the aim of helping more interpreters to better use the addition technique and minimize errors.
