Famous researcher Daniel Gile mentioned a kind of overload could cause the deterioration of interpreting quality. However, there has been little attempt to study the effect of overload on interpreting quality. Therefore, this research aims to study the impact of overload on the quality of E-C consecutive interpreting with Gile's Effort Model as the theoretical framework. The effect of overload on E-C consecutive interpreting quality is explored through an empirical study in this paper.Research results of this paper show that, fidelity, clarity, and fluency of interpreting output from trainee interpreters drop because of overload.Fidelity is affected by overload the most, followed by clarity and fluency. This research also finds that trainee interpreters distributed most of their attention to listening and analysis and note-reading component in interpreting process because their ability to listen and analyze the source speech, and record source speech with notes is limited.More training on listening and analysis, and note-taking may help improve the quality of E-C consecutive interpreting of trainee interpreters.
