A Study On The Western Pure Land Illustration Of Bezeklik Caves

The belief of pure land in the West originated from northwest India and spread to China along the ancient Silk Road.As an important transportation hub connecting the hinterland and Central Asia,Turpan area in Xinjiang has found a large number of products of belief in Western Pure Land.Therefore,this paper selects the image of the Western Pure Land of Bezeklik Caves as the subject of iconological research,interprets the image content of caves 14,17,29 and 41,analyzes its artistic style,and discusses the development and popularity of the Western Pure Land belief statues in Qoco Uighur period of Bezeklik Caves based on the changes of the image configuration of the Western Pure Land of the grottoes.The full text is divided into four chapters.In the introduction part,the investigation reports and research articles concerning the belief documents and images of the Western Pure Land in Turpan are summarized,and it is found that there are still few monographic articles about the image of the Western Pure Land in Bezeklik Caves,and there is still some research space.The first chapter briefly summarizes the origin and development of Western Pure Land belief statues,pointing out that the Western Pure Land belief statues in Turpan did not keep pace with other regions.At the same time,the paper investigates the translation of the faith documents of the Western Pure Land unearthed in the area,and determines the translation of Buddhist classics based on the image of the Western Pure Land of Bezeklik Caves.The second chapter introduces the general situation of Bezeklik Caves,explains and reads the image content of the Western Pure Land Scripture transformation of Bezeklik Caves based on the Buddhist classics,and subdivides the image naming of the Western Pure Land Scripture transformation of the main wall of caves 14,29 and 41.The third chapter analyzes the artistic style of the Western Pure Land Jingbian image of Bezeklik Caves,and explores the connection with the surrounding art from the aspects of artistic expression and composition layout.At the same time,we should pay attention to the religious connotation of the Western Pure Land image from the composition layout to the theme configuration.The fourth chapter analyzes the utilitarian purpose of the combination of the Western Pure Land jingbianduo and Guanyin Jingbian images.According to the changes of the Western Pure Land in Bezeklik Caves(period,quantity,location of the grottoes),we can understand the development and popularity of the belief of the Western Pure Land in Qoco Uighur period.
