English reading plays an important role in English learning.Students should not only learn to read,but also learn how to read,improve their cognitive ability and promote autonomous learning.Graphic organizers can transform abstract and complicated texts into simple and concrete visual graphs to promote students' reading.Studies at home and abroad have fully proved the role of graphic organizers,so this study mainly explores how to apply graphic organizers in English reading to help students read.Based on the constructivism theory and thinking visualization theory,this study explores the following questions through three cycles of lesson studies: First,how to select the appropriate graphic organizers according to the teaching materials? Second,how to use graphic organizers to help students grasp the text structure in reading? Third,how to use graphic organizers to help students extract and integrate information in reading? The selected graphic organizers adopted the classification of Jiang and Grabe.The participants were 44 students from a class of Grade 8.The research methods were classroom observation,interviews and self-reflection.After three cycles of the study,the main findings were as follows:First,the correct analysis of the text can effectively select the appropriate graphic organizers,which can be analyzed from three aspects: theme and content,writing intention,stylistic features and language.Second,students and the teacher can first jointly generate the main part of the graphic organizers to grasp the text structure.Third,after the main part was generated,the information of the articles was extracted and integrated by filling in details of the graphic organizers to promote theunderstanding of the contents.The implications of the study are as follows: First,teachers need to improve the ability of text analysis in order to better choose suitable graphic organizers and thus promote the development of students' reading and thinking abilities.Secondly,teachers need to select the proper way to present the graphic organizers and improve the ability of applying graphic organizers to English reading activities.Thirdly,when applying graphic organizers,teachers need to ensure that the detailed questions should be scientific,ideological and logical,thus promoting the development of students' reading and thinking abilities.As for graphic organizers suitable for different literature styles,further exploration is needed.
