A Study On The Cultivation Of Students’ Cultural Awareness In Exemplary English Lessons In Junior High School

In order to understand the culture teaching in English classes in junior high school and provide implications for culture teaching in daily English classes,this paper took the exemplary lessons in the 12 th National Junior High School English Teaching Demonstration as examples,took the classroom observation as the main research method,and took script analysis as the main means to analyze whether and how culture awareness training was done in junior high school English classroom.By observing the videos of 13 exemplary lessons,the relevant data and information were collected.This paper took teachers and students as the observation dimension and teachers’ teaching and students’ learning as the research perspective to study the cultivation of cultural awareness in junior high school,there are four main research questions:(1)What are the cultural teaching methods used by teachers in these exemplary lessons?(2)What are the contents of the cultural teaching used by teachers in these exemplary lessons?(3)What are the types of cultural learning activities used by students in these exemplary lessons?(4)What are the organizational forms of culture teaching used by teachers in these English exemplary lessons?The results are as follows.Firstly,the teachers of these exemplary lessons have diversified cultural teaching methods,including comparison,culture aside,object teaching,verbal interaction,creating situation,elicitation,and etc.Among them,verbal interaction was used the most.Secondly,teachers’ cultural teaching content was rich,mainly involving affective attitudes(including cooperation spirit,values,competition consciousness,interest,motivation,etc.),local customs,history and geography.Thirdly,they used flexible types of cultural learning activities,mainly including listening,discussion,written exercises,role-playing,information recalling,picture and video watching,reporting,peer cooperation,answering questions,silent reading and so on.Among them,listening and discussion activities were used most.Fourthly,various forms of cultural teaching organization were used,including individual activities,peer activities,group activities,and class activities.Among them,class activities were the most.In view of the above conclusions,this paper suggests that junior high school English teachers should enrich cultural teaching methods: emphasizing on verbal interaction,flexibly using object teaching,elicitation,creating situations and making good use of cultural comparison.Secondly,they should enrich cultural teaching contents to guide students to form a positive affective attitude: enrich information concerning local customs,history and geography.They should also guide students’ cultural learning activities flexibly: language input and output and the characteristics of students should be taken into consideration.They should adopt various forms of cultural teaching organization.The study has some limitations,including the limited research samples and research scope,which needs to be improved in further research.
