On The Musicality Of Carpentier's Novels

Alejo Carpentier is one of Cuba's most important writers of the twentieth century.Most domestic studies focus on the pioneer identity of “literary explosion” and“magic reality” theory,while ignoring his literary consciousness as a highly accomplished musician.Music inspired the creation of the novel and became the soul of the novel.In the tide of Latin American literature change,Carpentier applied the music form to the creation of novels,realizing the desire to change the current form of Latin American novels,and promoting the free exploration of Latin American novels from within to the forms.In addition,the description of music also constitutes the ideological and cultural connotation of the novel,showing the unique cultural map and social picture of Latin America.In general,Carpentier's reference to music is to enrich and deepen the characteristics of literature,and the novel's musicality can complement and improve literary creation.This article intends to adopt the interdisciplinary research method in comparative literature,focusing on the study of musicology theory and western music form theory,combining the latest research results of the relationship between music and literature,borrowing from narratology and other related theories.The textual reading method is used to analyze Carpentier's five novels and one short and medium novel,interpret the musicality in the novel,and further explore the relationship between literature and music.The introduction of the thesis describes the the influence of music on Carpentier.It traces the relationship between literature and music,further defines the concept of musicality,sorts out the current research status at home and abroad,and explains the research methods and ideas of this thesis.The first chapter details the musicality of Carpentier's novel structure.It analyzes the reference and application of the structure mode of the novel to the Sonata,Rondo and Fugue in western music,Revealing the historical and literary background hidden in the text.The second chapter starts from the musical narrative method,studies the inspiration of Baroque music,musicians Wagner and Schoenberg to Carpentier,and analyzes the application of music skills in his novel creation.This chapter will analyze the musicality of the novel from the narrative rhythm,dominant motive and narrative sequence.Chapter three analyzes the explicit performance of music in Carpentier's novels,and expands his composition of expressing ideas with music.Starting from the musical elements of the novel's lyrics and musical instruments,focusing on the thematic expression of music in Carpentier's novels.In raising music to a symbol of Latin American cultural symbols,Carpentier tried to Build a magical world in which multiple cultures coexist.In the Latin American literary revolution,the musicality of Carpentier's novels is a bold attempt,and it is worthy of further exploration and research as an interdisciplinary creation.
