A Study On Literary Theories Of Tony Bennett

Tony Bennett is a well-known British cultural research theorist and literary critic of Marxism.Based on the careful reading of Bennett' s theoretical works related to literary thoughts,this article uses comparative research and a combination of abstract summary and specific analysis to study the development process and the theoretical results of Bennett 's literary thoughts.This article first traces the theoretical sources of Bennett' s literary thoughts,and explores the British Marxist traditions including Williams 'cultural materialism and postmodern ideological trends,including linguistics,semiotics,deconstruction,and Foucault' s theory's impact of the emergence and development of Bennett' s literary theories.Bennett began his literary research by opposing the alliance between aesthetics and Marxism and seeking to cut off the connection between Marxist literary theory and aesthetics.By analyzing the adverse effects of the focus of philosophical aesthetics on the theoretical construction and critical practice of Marxist literary theory,he proved that the analytical procedures of aesthetics are incompatible with Marxist social historical logic.So Bennett called on us to reconstruct the theoretical space of literature beyond aesthetics.Bennett was influenced by the post-modern trend of thought,opposed to Marxism's totalising pretensions and binary hierarchical structure,and finally turned to the post-Marxist position.Bennett regards literature as a field of discourse practice that interacts with other fields at the same level.He advocates reading formations instead of "metaphysical" texts as the object of literary studies,and requires the development of a more specific and constructive literary political criticism.Bennett used the "inter-textuality" and reading formation theory to effectively analyze the social phenomenon of James Bond,and proposed that textual analysisshould focus on the text and readers constructed by a specific social material foundation,ideology and system,and on their interaction process takes place in the specific context.It also emphasizes Bennett' s claim that literary studies should focus on popular literature.The practicality of Bennett' s literary theory and his pragmatic style that pay attention to the connection between literary criticism and studies and the real society have a positive reference for the development of Chinese literary theory.
