The simulated C-E simultaneous interpreting practice of this interpreting project was based on the cultural lecture— A Historical Perspective to the Golden Age of Emperor Wu of Han given by the history professor Mr.Sun Jiazhou of Renmin University of China, delivered at the Well-known Experts Forum in Wuhan City. The lecture, targeting at the widespread audience from home and abroad,is delivered in a unique manner with dynamic features. In other words, the lecture is heavily-loaded with language items like proper nouns,Chinese idioms and cultural quotes, and the content entails significant features of culture specificity and information complexity, which turns out to be key challenges and difficulties of interpreting particularly this simulated E-C simultaneous interpreting task.Based on the simulated C-E simultaneous interpreting of the lecture, this report identifies and elucidates problems triggered by the above-mentioned cultural elements in the interpreting, proposing viable coping tactics for the interpreting difficulties for the purpose of conveying as much effective traditional Chinese cultural information as possible and achieving the expected intercultural communication in simultaneous interpreting while taking into account the immediacy of interpreting in nature. With an in-depth analysis of the written documents, interpreting video and recording as well as the audience feedback, the interpreting difficulties are identified in consistency with the core concepts of Culture-Specific Items(hereinafter referred to CSI):(1)difficulty in delivering connotative sense of proper nouns;(2)difficulty in recapturing sentimental factor of Chinese idioms;(3)difficulty in conveying semantic tenor of cultural quotes. These difficulties impeded the fluency, completeness and efficacy of the interpretation, thus hampering the function of the target language for effective intercultural communication.Within the framework of the Skopos Theory, this report presents applicable coping tactics for the identified difficulties:(1)adopting the two tactics of transliteration with explication, and paraphrasing to deliver connotative sense of proper nouns;(2)applying the two tactics of contextual amplification and interpretive extension to recapture sentimental factor of Chinese idioms;(3)employing the two tactics of shift of focus and summarization of information to convey semantic tenor of cultural quotes. To summarize, this report epitomizes the interpreting task of the lecture, aiming to resolve interpreting difficulties invoked by CSI and illuminate interpreting practices concerning cultural information of such kind.
