A Report On Translating California Employment Law:An Employer's Guide(Excerpts)

With the rapid development of globalization,economic and cultural exchanges around the world are becoming more frequent.The increasing number of international workers makes it important to understand employment laws outside our country.In order to understand the employment law in California,the author selects two chapters in the book California Employment Law: An Employer's Guide written by Dr.McDonald.The author of this book presents his constructive suggestions on employee management from the perspective of an experienced lawyer.This report is based on the translation of Chapter One and Chapter Four of this book.Chapter One mainly presents the current situation of the California employment law while Chapter Four introduces how to conduct the policies in employee handbooks from many aspects.Based on the delivery of information,the language of the source text is plain but the content is rich.The difficulties of this translation material lie in the fact that a large number of proper nouns about law and human resource management,and many long sentences and passive sentences are involved.Therefore,the author should have certain professional knowledge and be flexible when she changes the expression of the source language to achieve a better translation.After in-depth analysis,the author locates it as the informative text under Newmark's textual function classification and employs his communicative translation theory as a guide,combining with a variety of translation strategies to practice.In the specific process of English-Chinese translation,extension,addition,division,conversion and other skills are adopted to increase the readability of the translation.The author hopes to cast light on the translation practice of the same type of text through this report.
