Khaled Hosseini is one of the most eminent Afghan-American novelists in contemporary literary world.Published in 2013,And the Mountains Echoed probes into the familial affection among parents and children and siblings. In the novel,Nila as a woman and Suleiman as a homosexual are deeply oppressed.Founded on the Foucault's theory about body, this thesis endeavors to figure out how Nila and Suleiman are forced into the role of the Other under social norms of patriarchy and heterosexuality, exploring into the concept of body politics of the novel.Chapter One analyzes the similarities and differences of Nila's body and Suleiman's body with the body of traditional female and male under others' gaze.Due to the gaze,Nila and Suleiman realize that they can utilize their body to either fight or hide in patriarchy.Chapter Two exposes that Nila's body is confined by her father and other members of the society.Meanwhile,Suleiman's body is alienated by religious mores in patriarchal society.Chapter Three discusses Nila's body and Suleiman's body are marginalized as the illegal and unqualified body of the Other in patriarchy.Nila, who conducts deviant behaviors to fight patriarchy, loses the ability to have children.Suleiman, who refuses to make his sexual orientation public due to his fear of becoming a social outcast,is paralyzed in his later life. Both Nila's and Suleiman's experience reflect Hosseini's sympathy and solicitude for Afghan women and homosexual group.
