Khaled Hosseini(1965-)is an Afghan-American writer. To date,he has published four novels: The Kite Runner,A Thousand Splendid Suns,And the Mountains Echoed, and Sea Prayer. These outstanding novels have won him many awards and reputations in the world.Focusing on the lives and emotions of the Afghan people,Hosseini also shows condemnation of social issues such as war, class gaps, and gender discrimination in his works. In And the Mountains Echoed, the author tells a story of several families and generations spanning a sixty-year time dimension from the perspective of nine personalities in the background of Afghanistan, the United States, and France. Thus,it can be seen that the narrative picture constructed by this novel is very grand. This thesis uses Henry Lefebvre's theory of social space and Gabriel Zoran's theory of space in narrative to explore the narrative space constructed by this novel from three aspects:topographical space, textual space and social space. This thesis consists of five parts. The first part is the introduction, which begins with a brief introduction to Hosseini and And the Mountains Echoed, then makes a literature review of the writer's works both at home and abroad, and finally summarizes Lefebvre and Zoran's space theory. The first chapter discusses the topographical space in the text.Topographical space is the epitome of character activities and the changing times. The characterization of the character and the description of the geographical environment contribute to each other. This chapter mainly analyzes the character's psychology, the changes in the geographical environment, and the relationship between them. The second chapter analyzes the textual space of the novel from the aspects of the selectivity of language, the linearity of the text, and the perspectival structure. The author divides the novel into nine chapters, each of which is a small story. The author's ability to rein such a grand narrative is attributed to his exquisite narrative skills, which enable the plot of the novel to be organized in an orderly manner around the theme. The first two chapters analyze the narrative aspects of And the Mountains Echoed from the perspective of Zoran's theory of space. In order to further explore the connotation of narrative space constructed by Hosseini, thethird chapter uses Lefebvre's theory of social space to explore the social space of the novel.Afghanistan's unique history, politics, and religion have had a huge impact on society. This chapter analyzes the text from three aspects: gender discrimination, class gap,and the identity of immigrants. The last part of the thesis is the conclusion. In And the Mountains Echoed,Hosseini highlights the problems of Afghan society, shows a strong condemnation of cruel war, calls on people to pay attention to Afghanistan and Afghan immigrants, and expresses a call for eternal love.
