A Practice Report On The Role Of The Interpreter From The Perspective Of Bourdieu's Practice Theory

In the past few decades,interpreting studies are mainly conducted on the cognitive and linguistic level,but recently there is a growing tendency towards studying interpretation from the perspective of sociology among the international academia,and this tendency is called the “sociological turn of interpretation study”.Interpretation is a complicated activity,and if people only analyze the cognitive process of interpretation or if they only focus on the linguistic level,some key points could be ignored,including the role that the interpreter should play,the role that he is forced to play,and the role that he plays.To figure out these key points,the effort should be devoted to studying the agency and power of the interpreter.However,there is no established theory or research tool in the interpretation field to analyze these social factors that might influence the performance of an interpreter.That's the reason why the sociological turn of interpretation studies becomes necessary.Bourdieu's sociology enables researchers to further study interpretation as a social interaction,study the role of the interpreter and the process of coordination,etc.Given that the translation and interpretation studies from the perspective of sociology have a relatively small scale in China,this paper applies Bourdieu's practice theory,especially his concept of habitus,capital and field,on the micro-level to study how to strengthen the role of the interpreter with concrete examples.
