Reading is important for children to learn a foreign language and develop their abilities.But the teaching materials in primary school cannot meet the students' needs,so more and more teachers realize the importance of introducing extensive reading materials.Based on this,this thesis aims to apply English stories to reading teaching,so as to improve students' interest and reading ability.The purpose of this thesis is to answer two questions: 1.What is the effect of applying stories to reading teaching on arousing students' interest? 2.What is the effect of applying stories to reading teaching on improving students' reading ability?The author conducted the study for 12 weeks.Two parallel classes of 88 students in Grade Six from a primary school in Shenyang were chosen as the subjects.Class Six was chosen as the experimental class and given one reading class each week.Class Eight was the control class which has the traditional English classes.The author conducted two tests,two interviews and an observation.The test results were analyzed by SPSS19.0.The interview and observation results were classified and analyzed immediately after the collection.The result of pre-test showed that the students in the two classes had no significant difference in reading comprehension.In the post-test,the results proved that the students in the experimental class made a great improvement in reading comprehension.Through the comparative analysis of the interviews,it can be seen that the students' interest in reading increased and they began to use reading strategies consciously after theapplying of stories to reading teaching.Therefore,it is concluded that: 1.The application of stories to reading teaching has an positive effect on improving the students' interest in reading.Their self-confidence increased,their attitude towards reading and reading habits changed positively.2.The application of stories to reading teaching contributes to improving students' reading ability in the aspects of guessing,inferring the plot,understanding the structure,analyzing the characters and summarizing the theme of the story.
