Teacher feedback is one of the crucial methods in classroom interaction and a significant role in affecting students' feeling and emotion.Improving the quality of teachers' verbal feedback has drawn researchers' attention because inappropriate teachers' verbal feedback has a negative effect on students' language learning.In order to improve the quality of teachers' verbal feedback,using politeness strategies appropriate is one effective way to do so.For this reason,this research attempts to investigate the appropriate and effective application of politeness strategies in teachers' verbal feedback to English reading teaching in senior high schools to improve the quality of teachers' verbal feedback.To achieve this goal,three research questions are raised:(1)What kinds of teachers' verbal feedback do English teachers in senior high school employ in reading teaching?(2)What politeness strategies do English teachers in senior high school employ when giving verbal feedback in reading teaching?(3)Are there any differences in using politeness strategies with students' different performance when they answer questions?Four teachers are chosen from two senior high schools as participants and data is collected by classroom observation.This research found that(1)teachers tend to use kinds of verbal feedback in senior high school English reading teaching;(2)teachershave a preference in giving verbal feedback;(3)the types of politeness strategies used in teachers' verbal feedback are diverse;(4)teachers have a preference of using politeness strategies in giving verbal feedback;(5)types and frequency of adopting politeness strategies in giving verbal feedback are different on students' different performance in question answer.In the end,this research puts forward the following suggestions:(1)different kinds of positive verbal feedback should be used to approve students' right answers;(2)implicit negative verbal feedback should be used more to correct students' answers;(3)mixed feedback forms can be used by English teachers in senior high school reading teaching;(4)the significance of using politeness strategies in teachers' verbal feedback should be highlighted and relevant pragmatics knowledge should be enriched in teacher training;(5)teachers should concern about students' face wants and employ various types of politeness strategies in teachers' verbal feedback;(6)teachers should make strategic use of politeness strategies based on students' different performance.
