As English teachers,we all know that vocabulary plays an important role in the process of English teaching.The amount of students' vocabulary largely determines their ability to use spoken and written English and their ability of comprehensive expression.In the new curriculum standards,students are required to have a wide vocabulary and can use it correctly.Therefore,teachers should not only teach knowledge to students,but also study and explore teaching methods on how to teach vocabulary,which is meaningful for English teaching and learning.Through empirical research,this thesis does a research on the recent teaching situation of vocabulary in Hengshui Experimental Senior High School of Qujing.This thesis tries to make some suggestions for teachers to improve their English vocabulary teaching level and for students to improve their English application ability,which is the purpose of this thesis.Based on the questionnaire survey and interview of English vocabulary teaching in Hengshui Experimental Senior High school of Qujing,I find that some problems exist in English vocabulary teaching in high school: 1)lack of vocabulary teaching theories and weak awareness of scientific research;2)improper vocabulary teaching methods;3)no real realization of hierarchical teaching;4)pay little attention to students' emotional needs.This thesis has conducted a questionnaire survey on the students' current learning situation of English vocabulary in Hengshui Experimental Senior High School of Qujing,I find that there are some problems in high school English vocabulary learning: 1)poor vocabulary;2)use the words improperly;3)lack of metacognitive strategy guidance;4)single memory mode;5)lack of reading which leads to the single source of vocabulary.Therefore,it is a challenging problem for high school English teachers to find out a set of efficient teaching methods to teach vocabulary.The author will study the problems of vocabulary teaching in senior high school and put forward some effective methods to improve vocabulary teaching.The conclusion of this thesis is that teachers should renew their teaching concept in order to improve English teachers' vocabulary teaching level and the ability of students to use vocabulary.In addition,teachers should organically combine teaching with research in teaching,take cultivating students' core qualities of English learning materials as the starting point,constantly review their own teaching methods,reflect on their teaching effects,carry out action research,purposefully implement teaching improvement,optimize teaching methods and improve teaching effects.Teachers should highlight the vocabulary teaching skills,such as teaching students to guess words according to the context or expanding by reading.Because of my limited ability and insufficient questionnaire samples,this thesis is not perfect.However,research and exploration mean hope.It is hoped that through the joint efforts of teachers,English vocabulary teaching will be promoted to a new height.
