English vocabulary is vital to students' ability of comprehension and language output when learning English.Students' inadequate vocabulary will not only affect the teaching effect,but also hinder the students' utilizing the language.The compulsory education English Curriculum Standard(2011)requires junior high school graduates to master 1500 to 1600 words and 200 to 300 idioms or fixed collocations.It can be seen that vocabulary is one of the main contents of English teaching,and it is the basis of students' English language as well.As the first step of vocabulary teaching,vocabulary presentation can provide learners with information about the sound,forms,meanings,parts of speech and usage of new vocabulary.Effective way of vocabulary presentation can promote the memory and retention of vocabulary,which is conducive to the improvement of students' English ability.From this perspective,it is of great significance to further explore the efficient way of vocabulary presentation in the process of vocabulary teaching and vocabulary learning.In this study,162 students from Class 3,Class 9 and Class 10 of Grade 7 in Tengchong Experimental School were selected as the subjects.The enrollment performance,the gender ratio and the ethnic ratio of the students were basically similar.And the effects of different vocabulary presentation modes on students' vocabulary memory were explored.The vocabulary teaching experiment was carried out in three ways: the vocabulary list presentation,the picture presentation and the example presentation.Each mode of vocabulary presentation showed three nouns,three adjectives,three verbs and one adverb,a total of ten words.The above target words were presented to the students of Class Three in the form of vocabulary list,to Class Nine in the form of pictures,and to Class Ten in the form of examples.The English teacher of each class taught the pronunciation and Chinese interpretation of the new words at the same class time,and the time duration of the three classes' vocabulary presentation was the same,that is,20 minutes.After the target words were presented,the subjects weretested immediately as well as a week later.The content,time and form of the two tests were identical.After the delayed test,group interview was conducted.After the collection of the test paper,all the data from the immediate test and the delayed test were put into SPSS 22.0 data processing software for analysis.The findings of this study are as follows:(1)In the immediate test,there is little significant difference in the effect of the three vocabulary presentation modes on memory effects.The significant difference of the vocabulary list presentation,the picture presentation and the example presentation is 0.88,which is much higher than the 0.05 significant level.But different vocabulary presentation has different impacts on short-term vocabulary memory.The average score of picture presentation is 64.07,which is significantly higher than the average scores of the other two presentation modes.The average score of example presentation is 62.22 and that of vocabulary list presentation is 62.02,between which there is no obvious difference.(2)In the delayed test,there is significant difference in the memory effect among the three modes of the vocabulary list presentation,the picture presentation and the example presentation(P = 0.03).The memory effect of example presentation is the best,that of the vocabulary list presentation is the worst,and that of the picture presentation is in-between.(3)Among vocabulary list presentation,the picture presentation and the example presentation,there is no significant difference in the effect on the memory of words with different part of speech.But in short-term memory,the effect of picture presentation on the memory of verbs and nouns is the best,and the effect of the example presentation on the memory of adjectives is the best.In long-term memory,the effect of example presentation on the memory of all the words is the best,followed by the picture presentation and vocabulary list presentation.With example presentation,the average score of the noun is 13.33,which shows the memory effect is the best.In addition,in terms of vocabulary retention,students tend to forget words at different speeds.The retention of words presented in the mode of example presentation is the best,followed by the picture presentation and vocabulary list presentation.Based on the findings,some implications are concluded at the end of the paper.First,teachers should flexibly use various ways of presenting vocabulary according to teaching purposes.Second,different ways of presenting words should be selected according to the part of speech of different words.Third,teachers should fully understand the importance of vocabulary presentation and enhance the awareness of the way of vocabulary presentation.In vocabulary presentation,different presentation methods should be adopted according to students' learning levels.Fourth,both teachers and students need to use the rule of forgetting to strengthen the memory effect.
