This English-Chinese translation report is based upon the first five chapters excerpted from the autobiography Behind the Screen by Samuel Goldwyn, one of the most talented American producers of Hollywood in the 20 th century. In the view of the original author, his recollection records the development of some film industries from the late 19 th to the early20 th century in the United States, including the thriving long motion pictures and the author's pioneering enterprise in Hollywood,as well as the real life of some famous artists behind the screen at that time. With the spirit of innovation and courage, this work can encourage the young dreamers of nowadays to go on with more confidence;the record of the artists' persistent pursuit of ideal performance can also inspire the younger generation to establish a rational idolatry. This report is divided into five parts. The first part is mainly about the translation task. The second chapter is the record of the translation process,in which the period of pre-translation is associated with Steiner's trust motion. The third section introduces Steiner's hermeneutic model for translation of fourfold motion and its application in biography translation. The fourth chapter is the core demonstration, where the translator analyzes some translation methods of this biography text with a few examples illuminated by Steiner's model. The fifth part summarizes translation problems and experience, including a bit of new understanding of the translator's subjectivity in biography translation. The original text is arranged by a moving-fast plot with a humorous effect achieved by various rhetorical devices, which is a challenge to the translator at the lexical and syntactic level in order to convey this original style to the target readers. So the translator adopts Steiner's motion of aggression and incorporation to solve the difficulty of conveying the cultural message as well as his restitution motion as a translation strategy.Through applying various methods like syntactical order conversion, paraphrase and Chinese four-character format, the translator tries to achieve the “balance” proposed by Steiner, that is,the “balance”between the original text and the translated text as well as the “balance” between the content conveyed and the language style. In conclusion, biographical texts are both historical and artistic, and thus translators should use all sorts of translation methods or techniques flexibly guided by an appropriate strategy,as evidenced in this translation project.
