This is a report on a Chinese-English translation practice.The source text is selected from China Mirrored in Characters co-authorized by Zhang Sufeng,Song Chunshu and Na Hong.It is a book published by Zhonghua Book Company in 2017.No English version of this book has been found currently.The translator chooses the first chapter as the source text which contains 10,242 Chinese characters.The selected text mainly describes the social hierarchy of ancient China from the perspective of Chinese characters.In this translation report,the translator analyzes the major difficulties encountered in the process of translation and illustrates the corresponding translation methods.As for the ancient official titles,the translator applies the method of semantic and phonetic notation.The translator uses the method of annotated transliteration and explanation to deal with culture-loaded words and Chinese four-character idioms respectively.At the same time,the translator adopts the method of reframing discourses to deal with the run-on sentences in the source text.Chinese characters are a very important part of Chinese culture.On the basis of being faithful to the source text,the translator hopes to enable the target language readers to have a deep understanding of the Chinese culture mirrored in Chinese characters,so as to promote Chinese culture to the world.
