Reading is an indispensable part of English classroom teaching and an important way for students to acquire knowledge. The traditional reading learning mode is teacher-centered and neglects the cultivation of students' autonomic learning ability. The development of computer technology provides new possibilities for English classroom teaching. This research aims to testify whether the application of CALL in senior high schools' reading learning is effective or not.More specifically, there are two research questions to be probed into:(1)Can computer-assisted English reading teaching improve the students' reading proficiency?(2)Can computer-assisted English reading teaching stimulate students' interest in English reading? In order to answer these two research questions, the author designs an experiment. The experimental subjects are 77 students from two classes of Grade One in a senior high school of Yuxi,Yunnan province, and among them,38 students are in the experimental class and 39 students are in the control class. In the study, questionnaires, tests and interviews are adopted as the research instruments, and 16weeks' teaching experiment are conducted in both EC and CC.Before the experiment,pre-questionnaires are given out to the students from EC and CC to find out their interest in English reading.During the experiment, the EC students are taught English reading with the assistance of computers, while the CC students are taught reading with the traditional teaching method. After the experiment,post-test is conducted in two classes to testify whether the application of CALL in senior high schools' reading learning is effective or not. Then post-questionnaires are distributed to the students from EC and CC to find out the changes of their interest in English reading. At last, the author interviews six students.By qualitative and quantitative analysis of all the data, the experimental results show that:(1)The experimental class performs better than the control class in the reading test.Specifically, the EC students perform better than those in CC as for reading because the mean score of EC(21.37)is higher than the mean of CC(17.49).Besides,the value of p in independent samples T-test is 0.009 <0.05,which means that the students' reading scores from the experimental class' s post-test is of a significant difference compared with the control class.(2)The results of the questionnaires show that students in EC have improved their English reading interest, because compared with pre-questionnaire,the percentage of agree and strongly agree in post-questionnaire has seen a great change. And the results also show that students in EC are more interested in English reading than the students in CC.Besides, the results of the interview show that students in EC are interested in the application of CALL in English teaching.
