A Practice Report On E-C Translation Of Popular Science Text About Animals

Popular science text is a branch of science and technology text which can spread scientific knowledge to the public in simple words.Nowadays there is a growing demand for popular science translation.Nonetheless,not enough attention has been paid to the research on popular science translation in China,and few achievements in systematic research of this filed have been made.Hence the research on the practice of popular science translation still has a certain practical significance and realistic value.Guided by the frame of "Comprehension-Expression-Adaptation",this report analyses issues and solutions occurring in the writer's translation process of popular science text about animals by means of case study.This thesis advocates that translation is a process of comprehension,expression,adaptation,in which different translation theories and methods can be adopted appropriately."Comprehension" is the foundation of the whole translation activity.For E-C translation of popular science text,translators should focus close attention on proper noun and common noun with special meaning in particular context.Furthermore,translators can utilize background information to comprehend the original."Expression" is the second step of translating.On account of the characteristics of popular science text,translators are supposed to pay attention to the expression methods of vocabulary,sentence and genre.During this procedure,duly degree of adaption,such as applying Chinese idioms,adjusting the sequence of clause and appending explanatory notes,is employed intending to accord with target language readers' cultural circumstances,ways of thinking and idioms,thereby diffusing knowledge more effectively.The realistic significance of this research can be divided into two aspects.Firstly,with practical guiding significance,translation research on animal popular science from the angle of "Comprehension-Expression-Adaptation" can inject new vigor into translation study of popular science.Secondly,from the respective of social development,popular science translation about animals can popularize scientific knowledge about animals,thereby heightening public awareness of animal and nature protection.
