"Manuel de la Langue Chinoise Parlée,à l' Usage des Fran?ais",published by the printing house of the North Church in 1885,is an elementary Chinese textbook by Camille Clément Imbault-Huart,who was a diplomat of the French consulate in the late Qing Dynasty.This textbook includes grammar,sentences and lexis,so this dissertation shall start with the research on the writer,the background of the textbook and the teaching sections,then mainly concentrate on studying the reasons of the special structure and the teaching of grammar,sentences and lexis to find its teaching principles and characters.There are six chapters comprise the whole textbook:The first chapter is the introduction which summarizes the research significance and reviews of the selected target and introduces the theoretical foundation,methodologies and literature resources.The Second chapter investigates the life experience and major works of Camille Clément Imbault-Huart,along with the statement of the special structure,design concepts and its values.As one of the first successful textbooks during the French sinological transition from academism to pragmatism,Manuel de la Langue Chinoise Parlée,à l' Usage des Fran?ais could be considered as an elementary Chinese language textbook for the French from the aspects of its target readers,compiling style and teaching principles.The third chapter explores the lexis teaching of the book.The selection of vocabulary which aimed to be mainly about western cultural concepts leaded thistextbook to become a compete business language course,and the overlook of Chinese traditional culture could also be considered as a hypercorrection of the traditional academism.The fourth chapter is about sentences.From the practical point of view,this textbook respected western expressions,refined common sentence patterns,incorporated the users' life traces into the principles of language teaching and focused on learners long-term development of language skills.The fifth chapter analyzes the grammar teaching of the textbook.With the optimal challenge zone and reasonable number of grammatical rules,Manuel de la Langue Chinoise Parlée,à l' Usage des Fran?ais followed the western progressive ideas,emphasized the contrast between Chinese and French grammar and increatively added Chinese rhetoric teaching to the book for the purpose of satisfying the actual demands of the pragmatism.However,this textbook is only suitable for students with French background for there are so many French brands found in it.The sixth chapter gives an evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of the textbook.The advantages of the book lied in the great influence on the teaching methods which combined East and West embodied in both structure and content as a tentative transition from academism to pragmatism.Shortcomings can be found in its shortage of Chinese experts and the superabundant French brands which also resulted in the incomplete contents and the limited value.In short,it is an elementary Chinese textbook for French learners followed by three codes of pragmatism,gradualism and humanism.
