On The Definition Of Culture-specific Words In Grand Dictionnaire Chinois-fran?ais Contemporain

Definition is an essential part of a dictionary,and the quality of the definition is bound up with the language acquisition.The definition of culture-specific words is always perplexing the translators and lexicographers.They either treat meaning as selfcontained or meaning as a language module which can hardly reveal the multidimensional meaning.This research attempts to analyze systematically the representation of culturespecific words and trace the problems of the definition through quantitative and qualitative,sampling,and the case of study.Based on the multidimensional definition model,the research aims to rebuilt and correct the definition model of culture-specific words in the Grand Dictionnaire Chinois-Fran?ais Contemporain(GDCFC).The Word Sketch Engine and CCL(Centre for Chinese Linguistics PKU)will be resorted to verify the complete semantic structure of culture-specific words.After the analysis,the GDCFC sets the pace in bilingual lexicography and shows it advantages in definition diversity and the preservation of the cultural connotation and cultural background information.However,it over-depends on the monolingual dictionary and is influenced by the traditional model.Therefore,there are deficiencies in representing the semantic structure which involves much explanatory definition,impractical equivalents(explanatory definition),lacking part of speech,lacking the example in idioms and no cultural notes as well as lacking pictorial illustrations.Of the problems,some strategies are proposed according to the principles of the multidimensional model.This research remedy the problems existing in the GDCFC and provides a new perspective in studying the bilingual dictionary.Moreover,the systematic representation of culture-specific words contributes to the cultural communication between the French and Chinese language.
